Overview
Lubec is situated on the Easternmost point of the United States, on a hill at the end of a rugged, rocky penninsula that juts out into Passamaquoddy Bay. The main attraction is the nearly 100 miles of rugged New England coastline, which offers both hiking trails and bicycling routes with some of the most spectacular scenery imaginable. The incredible 25-foot tides change the coastline dramatically thoughout the course of the day. The area is noted for the diversity and abundance of songbirds, seabirds, as well other as land and sea wildlife, such as seals and otters. The woods, wetlands, grasslands, rockbound coastline and tidal seashore provide ideal wildlife habitat, inviting bald eagles to make their homes here.
For those who prefer being out on the open water, there are whale watching cruises which will take you into the feeding grounds for minke, right and humpback whales.
Lubec is also located directly on the United States border with New Brunswick, Canada. Those with an interest in history will enjoy crossing the bridge to nearby Campobello Island in the Bay of Fundy, where Franklin D. Roosevelt and his family sepnt their summers. A tour of their summer cottage and the surrounding grounds will take you back in time, with the children's toys still in the playroom and Franklin's reading glasses, hat and newspaper just as he may have left them in the sitting room. A visitors' center displays historic photographs and memorabilia, and also shows a movie documenting the years that the Roosevelt family spent here, and its beneficial impact on US-Canadian realtions.
Maine offers an ideal climate for wild blueberries, which can be picked and enjoyed along every hiking trail in late summer. A road trip will take you past field after field of blueberries.
